I went on a hunt for the best desk lighting for my home office -- and narrowed down my choices to the following five, all conveniently available online. These table lamps should fit the bill for most folks. They are energy saving, while providing great light for reading or computer work (which is what I use one for) as well as for other purposes like sewing, in a garage, etc.
I chose products that have good quality, flicker-free LED bulbs and do not strain the eyes or bring on a headache. All except one are dimmable to varying extents, which feature is something I think is useful. And most use modern touch-sensitive controls which are very easy to operate.
Some have USB charging ports, which means you can charge your mobile phone or other portable device when using the lamp. This could be great for places where there is no conveniently located point for charging. All of the products are adjustable and either have flexible goose-necks or can swivel and pivot to give light at an angle that you find best.
Let’s take a look at the products themselves.
It’s got five color modes and seven brightness levels, so you can find the tone and brightness that best suits your eyesight. I like that it can be used with an input from 110 volts to 240 volts, 50/60 hertz. On the flip side, the base is somewhat light, so it can move a bit when you are adjusting the angle. Not a big deal, but something to note. Since the arm can be folded flat against the base, it doesn’t take up much storage space when not in use. Overall, an excellent product.
It supports 7 levels of brightness and features touch sensitive controls. The lamp gives off evenly distributed, flicker-free light that is easy on the eyes; you can use it for a long stretches without an issue.
Unlike the previous product, this has a base that is weighted so that it doesn’t slide around or fall easily. Of course, if you extend the reach of the lamp beyond a point, it will tend to tilt to one side, but that won’t be an issue with normal use.
It’s most unique feature is a wonderful base lamp. This is a soft light that illuminates the base. And this base lamp can be lit up in any of 256 colors, using a circular touch-sensitive spectrum ring. You can even set it to cycle through these colors for a really cool effect. The base light makes a great night lamp that’s soft enough to sleep by yet bright enough to allow you to move around without bumping into things.
It’s got a flexible neck to you can twist it to any angle you wish. It has both a power adapter as well as a micro-USB cord for charging the battery and for use as a normal wired table lamp.
This is a fun product to have in your house and you’ll likely find yourself playing around with the base light!
It has a well-made, flexible gooseneck that you can turn to an angle you want. Unlike other products above, the lamp doesn’t offer brightness or color adjustments. It does provide good quality, steady light that’s great for all uses. It doesn’t have touch controls either, and has a switch on the power cord that’s attached to the lamp.
